You can find Lochgilphead nestling at the top of Loch Gilp, itself a branch of Loch Fyne which is the longest sea loch in Britain and became famous for herring fishing during the early to mid 1900s.
Lochgilphead has a population of 3000 people and is the administrative centre of Argyll and Bute.
The town is situated in the heart of Mid Argyll and to the north lies Kilmartin Glen an area of internationally important archaeological land where there are more than 350 ancient monuments. Kilmartin House Museum, an award winning world- class centre, has a shop and café.
To the east runs the Crinan canal which cuts through the Kintyre Peninsula on the way to the Western Isles. It passes through some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland and has an easily accessible towpath for walkers, cyclists and fishermen alike. It abounds with wild brown trout and is free to fish.
To the south lies Kintyre which has three ferry terminals where you can catch ferries to Islay, Jura, Gigha or Arran.
There are easily 100 lochs if not more within a one hour drive of Lochgilphead. Some are readily accessible such as the Coille-bharr and Loch Barnluasgan where you can step out of your car into the boats. Other lochs which are well worth a visit involve walks from 15 minutes to 2 hours but when you reach them you could very well feel you are the only person on earth.
